Loot, and weapon attachments specifically, are getting an overhaul as Apex Legends enters its 30th season. Like all battle royales, preparing for a fight means spending a significant amount of time hunting for weapons, attachments, grenades, or survival items. Now, Respawn Entertainment wants to significantly cut down the amount of time it takes for players to loot up.
These changes come alongside major buffs to Legends like Bloodhound, Loba, and Rampart as Apex Legends speeds up more and more every season.
Looting gets a makeover
The first few seconds of every match in Apex Legends is always spent, without fail, scrambling to pick up a weapon and start firing as soon as possible. From that point forward, players have to hunt through various bins, loot scattered on the ground, or find nearby weapon arsenals. That’s all changing as Respawn aims to get players focused on the fight even faster.
Respawn is cutting down on the time it takes to get ready by completely removing extended and weapon supply bins (which serve as a special benefit to the Support and Assault classes), taking away the loot dropped by targeting wildlife (like the spiders or prowlers on Storm Point), and changing how arsenals and lootbins will reset throughout a match.
According to Casey O’Brien, a Game Designer at Respawn, “by removing unnecessary clutter like specific bin types and wildlife loot, we’re clearing the path so you can spend less time organizing and more time engaging.”
Introducing Corrupted Attachments
Alongside the general changes to loot across the Outlands, weapon attachments are also getting a more specific rework. These new attachments are called Corrupted Attachments and, as the name hints, will provide some drawbacks while simultaneously upgrading a weapon. Instead of the old system that more vaguely described how an attachment would improve a weapon, corrupted attachments will display exact stats to show what’s different.
For example, the Corrupted Stock for the Triple Take in Loba’s hand shows that it will reduce the magazine size by one, meaning more time spent reloading, but it will increase the rate of fire, reload speed, and handling. Only one Corrupted Attachment can be added per weapon, so creating an entirely custom gun isn’t possible just yet.
This new type of weapon modification means players will have to consider what matters to them most in the end game–as the developers confirmed these types of attachments are rarer and will appear more as the match progresses–rather than just picking up the next best color on the rarity scale. This gives players a little more control over their loadout to match their preferred gameplay style.
