Ant and Dec delight as Saturday Night Takeaway ends with Local Hero

Ant and Dec and scores of Newcastle United fans were left delighted when Saturday Night Takeaway ended with the sounds of Local Hero.

At the end of packed show which saw Richard E.Grant become the latest Star Guest Announcer, them give away a host of dream holidays and see one audience member take home money can't buy prizes in Win the Ads, the presenters were joined by another North East star, Sam Fender.

The North Shields musician was on the show to follow in the footsteps of the stars of RuPaul's Drag Race UK and dance act Malevo by becoming the latest act to take part in the End of the Show Show on the ITV programme.

After making a confession about his BBC Breakfast appearance last year, which saw him turn up at the studio massively hungover after celebrating Newcastle United's takeover, Sam took to the stage with his band to perform their huge hit Seventeen Going Under.

Ant and Dec joined Sam on stage and, after they confirmed again that Saturday Night Takeaway is being cancelled next week because of the rugby, the pair of them looked over the moon when Sam's saxophone player Johnny Blue Hat started playing NUFC anthem Local Hero, the song by Dire Sraits legend Mark Knopfler that has quite written itself into Geordie folklore.

The sound of the classic track also struck a chord with plenty of people watching at home.

Replying to Ant and Dec's tweet about Saturday's episode, one fan told the duo: "More importantly - Local Hero! Made us smile...so thank you."

Another emotional viewer reacted: "Yup, cry every time local hero played....I need a warning before its played haha" and a third tweeted: "Ending Saturday Night Takeaway with Local Hero, what a vibe."
