Anne Williams memorial golf day returns to raise money for Carla Lane Animals in Need with support of Liverpool legend

Amateur golfers are teeing off on the latest Anne Williams golf day today as the tournament returns for its 11th year.

The tournament played in honour of the Formby mum and campaigner for justice will take place at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on Friday, July 7.

It has become a fixture on the Merseyside sporting calendar, honouring Anne’s memory following her death in 2013 after years of campaigning for her 15-year-old son Kevin and the 97 Liverpool supporters killed in 1989, by raising funds for worthy causes across Merseyside.

The event supports a different Merseyside charity each year and can count Anne's family, as well as the likes of Spirit of Shankly, City of Liverpool FC, An Hour for Others and The Farm among its backers.

Golfers will compete for a variety of different prizes throughout the day, and the winners will be awarded the Anne Williams shield.

This year the event will raise money for Carla Lane Animals in Need, in Melling, a charity set up 30 years ago to support, care for, rescue and rehome dogs, cats and other animals.

Ste Martin, organiser, said: "It'll be our 11th year running the tournament. It started on the Red All Over the Land (RAOTL) and we started by giving our second hand trophies and prizes, that sort of thing.

"We now have over 80 players and 30 caddies, we have some amazing prizes and support some brilliant causes.

"We never support a mainstream charity, we prefer to find somebody who really needs our help and the money,

"This year we'll be supporting Carla Lane Animals in Need from Melling, who take care of thousands of animals, from dogs to the smallest hamster. It's a great cause and they give every animal the best possible chance.

"We'll also be collecting for Fans Supporting Foodbanks and Anne Williams' family will be there for the presentations again."

Legendary Liverpool centre-back Phil Thompson also sent a message of support to those taking part, saying: "Wishing everybody good luck, it's going to be a wonderful day. The sun is going to be shining, cracking the flags.

"You'll have a wonderful day. No ringers.. alright! Make sure you give the proper scores in!

"Have a fantastic day, and remember, you'll never walk alone."

The event will also pay tribute to former ECHO journalist and campaigner Dan Kay, who died earlier this year. Dan was a huge supporter of the golf day since it started and was a close friend of the Williams family.
