Annan youngster lands top prizes in 2020 Castle Loch children's writing competition

Annan youngster Ewan Black has scooped two top prizes in this year’s Castle Loch children’s writing competition.

He won the five to nine-year-old category and the Lockerbie Writers’ trophy for best overall story for his tale called, The Luminous Loch, which the judges described as having “a really interesting plot” and “showed great imagination”.

The competition has been run for the past four years and is increasing in popularity.

According to Darren Flint, the Castle Loch project officer, the community trust received 51 entries coming from all over Dumfriesshire and as far as Edinburgh “which shows the popular appeal of this Lochmaben nature reserve”.

He said: “The entries showed a lot of imagination and positivity, which was particularly lovely to read during such a difficult year for many people.

“A big thank you has to go out to everyone that took the time to write their imaginative stories, the Lockerbie Writers for reading all the stories, Waterstones Dumfries and The Moffat Bookshop for the kind donation of prizes.”

Results:

Five to nine years: 1 Ewan Black from Annan; 2 Scarlett from Nethermill Primary. Highly commended, Iona from Lochmaben Primary

10-13 years: 1 Douglas from Ratho; 2 Megan from Ratho. Highly commended, Caitlin from Nethermill Primary.

Lockerbie Writers’ trophy: Ewan Black.
