Anger as Dunfermline to Edinburgh bus link axed

A local councillor has raised concerns over the removal of a vital bus link between Dunfermline and Edinburgh, warning that the decision is “counterproductive” and risks increasing road congestion.

The X52, which connects travellers to the capital, will be withdrawn by Stagecoach in August, as part of sweeping reductions, prompting criticism from Councillor James Calder.

He said: “The X52 is a key service that helps connect those in Dunfermline, including within Duloch, to Edinburgh.

"Its removal is counterproductive, particularly as we are trying to encourage more people to use public transport rather than cars. This cut will likely lead to increased congestion."

A spokesperson for Stagecoach East Scotland said: "These changes are primarily driven by adjustments to school transport contracts within Fife, as well as ongoing challenges caused by congestion, roadworks and low usage affecting certain journeys and services.

"We are proposing to remove service X52 due to continued low usage, however links between Duloch Park and Ferrytoll P&R will be maintained by service 5, allowing onward travel to Edinburgh, with buses departing the park and ride site up to every 5 minutes into Edinburgh during peak times. Service X55 will also continue to provide a frequent service, up to every 20 minutes, between Dunfermline and Edinburgh.

"We understand that changes to local bus services can be disruptive, and we are committed to working with local authorities and communities to ensure that travel needs continue to be met wherever possible. Customers can plan their journey and see all available travel options, as well as track live bus times and buy tickets on the Stagecoach app."
