Angel Gomes hands Manchester United boost as contract runs down

Manchester United clearly think highly of Angel Gomes... but will it be enough to keep him at Old Trafford?

In 2017, the attacking midfielder became United's youngest player since Duncan Edwards, playing against Crystal Palace at the age of 16 and 263 days old.

Since then, Gomes has struggled to nail down a regular first-team slot, showing flashes in the Europa League and Carabao Cup this term.

Now 19, Gomes' contract is up this summer.

However, Gomes' recent words on a Google Hangout with Andreas Pereira bode well for the Red Devils.

Speaking about his future, Gomes said: "I've seen it over the years, coming up from the academy and being at United my whole career.

"It's what I want to go on to do - win trophies for the club."

Sancho has been unable to make the breakthrough this season despite United's injury problems in attack, while Jadon Sancho's potential arrival from Borussia Dortmund will add further competition for places.

There have been suggestions that Gomes' lack of opportunities is at least partly due to his future being uncertain.

Solskjaer said of Chong's recent contract renewal: "With Tahith we’re very happy he sees his future here, we can see a very good player there and we’ll give him time to develop.

"That is the same with Angel. We hope we can convince him in the near future and long term future that he’s a Manchester United player."
