Ange Postecoglou told Celtic 'gem' is being overlooked as English boss raves about Hoops loanee

Celtic have a “gem” in Scott Robertson according to Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell after the youngster flourished in their 2-0 win over Burton Albion at the weekend.

The 20-year-old, who despite making a surprise senior debut for Celtic against CFR Cluj in the Europa League group stage in December 2019, has not featured competitively for the Hoops since.

Robertson signed a new three-year deal last summer and will be hoping to impress down south after making a loan switch to the English League One side on deadline day.

Ange Postecoglou is currently without captain Callum McGregor due to injury, with replacements James McCarthy and Ismalia Soro having failed to impress fans so far this season.

And speaking to NewsChain, Artell said: “I thought Scott Robertson was the best player on the pitch. He’s reliable in possession, he is tenacious in defence and he can pick a pass.

“I’m not sure what the new Celtic manager is looking for but he’s got a gem there. He’s certainly a good player for us and we’re delighted to have him here for the season.”

Robertson previously said of new boss Postecoglou: "From day one the manager has been able to get his messages across very quickly, the points he wanted to make are well understood.

"He wants us to play football the right way, it's about keeping the ball and pressing high up the pitch.

"He wants to get the midfield players on the ball and for me that's been great as it's one of my strengths to get on the ball and pass it. From my point of view it has been brilliant.

"He doesn't like it when you take too many touches and end up having to go back the way. He wants you to get your head up as soon as possible and pass the ball through the lines."

Robertson made 30 appearances combined in previous loan spells with Gillingham and Doncaster Rovers and hopes this recent move will solidify his status as a contender for first team football at Celtic Park.

He said: "When I moved out on loan to Doncaster last season it was all about trying to get games under my belt but this summer it was a bit different.

"I wanted to take my time and concentrate on getting a good pre-season under the new manager. As the closing of the transfer window neared it became clear I would need to go out on loan to play.

"I agreed with the manager when he said that to me and I'm a Celtic player on loan at Crewe and he said he'd keep a close eye on me. The aim is to come back to the club next summer and push for a first team place and hopefully I can make the impact I want to make in a Celtic shirt."
