Ange Postecoglou tipped to lead Celtic to European trophy success with 'no doubt' verdict

Martin O'Neill believes Celtic could land a European trophy under Ange Postecoglou.

The Hoops returned to the Champions League this season but finished bottom of their section with just two points from six games. That meant they were knocked out of European competition altogether in a first season back at the top table for a while. It was a learning experience for the Scottish champions with their boss determined to get back next term and make a better fist of things.

Last season Rangers reached the Europa League Final before losing out on penalties in heartbreaking circumstances against Bundesliga outfit Frankfurt. That run has given legendary Parkhead gaffer O'Neill belief the current crop under Postecoglou can go one better than the Light Blues and his class of 2003 in the second tier competition in the future.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: “Could Celtic win the Europa League under Ange? Absolutely, definitely.

“Obviously Rangers led the way on that last season by reaching the final.

“Some of their results were absolutely terrific along the way. They showed that it’s possible again.

“And if Celtic think domestically they are stronger than Rangers then there is no reason to suggest they can’t do it.

“Genuinely, I thought Rangers getting to the UEFA final was a fantastic achievement, really brilliant. They got as close as anybody - us in 2003 and Walter’s team in 2008.

“They were a goalkeeping save away even before the penalties - when the question being asked now would be could another Scottish team go and do it again.

“But if we’re talking specifically about the Europa League - the UEFA Cup - then Celtic could absolutely win it. No doubt.”
