Ange Postecoglou is top Tottenham target but structure issues thrown up by Arne Slot snub

Ange Postecoglou is Tottenham’s top target as they move on to yet another candidate.

The Celtic boss is also the bookies' favourite to take over the North London club after Spurs saw an attempt to persuade Arne Slot leave Feyenoord rebuffed, with the Dutchman ruling himself out. In a call that will give hope to Hoops fans, Slot decided to stick around in Rotterdam for at least another season after the De Kuip club qualified for the Champions League. The Parkhead faithful will be praying that their man wants another crack at the competition after sampling it for the first time this season.

Slot also had issues over Tottenham’s footballing structure, according to the Independent. Daniel Levy is on the hunt for a sporting director and Slot was unsure if he’d be able to work in such a system. Postecoglou wields immense power at Celtic when it comes to on pitch matters, and the prospect of giving up that sort of control could tempt him to stay put.

The lure of the English Premier League is strong however and the budget he’d be afforded by Spurs would dwarf anything Celtic could hope to offer, despite their due financial health and more Champions League riches set to pour into the Parkhead coffers.

A clean sweep of domestic trophies may also play a part in the Aussie’s thinking. That will be achieved should Celtic take care of Inverness CT in next week’s Scottish Cup final at Hampden, in which the champions are overwhelming favourites.

Postecoglou is joined in the betting by former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers. The Northern Irishman saw his standing among supporters plummet when he jumped ship for Leicester City in 2019, having previously assured fans he was keen to stick around to try and win a historic tenth title in a row.
