Ange Postecoglou 'discussed' by Wolves with Celtic boss among potential Bruno Lage replacements

Ange Postecoglou is reportedly one of a number of targets under discussion by Wolves after they sacked Bruno Lage.

The Portuguese was given his marching orders on Sunday a day after the Molineux club were beaten 2-0 West Ham. That result saw them slip into the relegation zone of the English Premier League, with just three goals scored all season. Lage was appointed boss in June 2021 after predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo left for Tottenham Hotspur.

Now the midlands club, who are prone to appointing Portuguese managers due to their close association with super agent Jorge Mendes, are on the hunt for Lage’s replacement, and the Telegraph reports Postecoglou is one of a jumper of candidates being talked about by club powerbrokers due to his impressive achievements north of the border with the Hoops. A Scottish Premiership title win during his first season in charge as well as a Premier Sports Cup win playing the style Celtic do has seen admiring glances cast from England.

However, doubts remain over the Aussie’s willingness to consider other options. He’s in the midst of his first ever Champions League campaign, with the Glasgow club battling it out in a group containing Real Madrid, RB leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk. Postecoglou had been linked with the recent vacancy at Brighton after Graham Potter was poached by Chelsea, but it's understood leaving was never really on the cards and the Seagulls opted for former Shakhtar boss Roberto De Zebri.

Whether Wolves would have a better chance of turning Postecoglou’s head than their Premier League rivals remains doubtful. Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui has previously been a target, while the Portuguese connection with Mendes puts Olympiacos head coach in the frame. Promoting from within is also being considered by club chiefs.

They are expected to make an appointment ahead of the weekend trip to play Chelsea. That preferred time frame makes the chances of a successful approach for Postecoglou even more remote.
