Andy Robertson backs Marcus Rashford to receive "standing ovation" at Anfield

Andy Robertson believes Marcus Rashford may receive a "standing ovation" at Anfield due to his "outstanding" work to tackle child food poverty.

Manchester United star Rashford led a successful campaign to ensure 1.3million children on free school meals continued to receive food vouchers into the summer holidays.

The 22-year-old has since continued his work by setting up a task force which aims to expand the scope of the free school meals programme.

And Robertson insists club rivalry between United and Liverpool could be put to one side in recognition of Rashford's charitable endeavours during the next North-West Derby at Anfield.

"The two words that everyone’s saying [during the pandemic] are ‘Marcus Rashford’," Robertson told The Times .

"He made politicians overturn the decision [not to extend free school meals] because he wanted every kid to get fed. What he’s done was amazing, outstanding.

Robertson added: “Once the fans are back in, Marcus Rashford could be the first Man United player to get a standing ovation here [Anfield].

"He’d definitely deserve it because thousands of families are getting fed now.”

Robertson and his Liverpool teammates will need to wait until 16 January 2021 before they next host their arch-rivals in the Premier League.

The Scotland captain also discussed his own involvement with charitable causes, saying: “My family have always given back.

“My brother hosted a party pre-lockdown, over Christmas, for his birthday - no gifts, just donations to food banks.

"During Covid, it came out in the paper - not that I wanted it to - that I’d given money to food banks to try to help families.

"These people just want food on their table and that’s something that better-off people can definitely provide for them.”
