Andy Lyons backing Ireland to make it to European Under-19 Championship semi-finals

Bohemians defender Andy Lyons is backing the Boys in Green to make it to the semi-finals of the European Under-19 Championships tomorrow/on Sunday.

A win against the Czech Republic would secure a place in the last four - as long as France avoid defeat to Norway - while a draw could also be enough for Tom Mohan’s men.

Lyons, whose club side are in action against St Patrick’s Athletic at the same time as Ireland’s match in Yerevan, says three points is well within their grasp.

“100 percent we have the ability in our squad to go and beat the Czechs and we know that,” he said.

“Obviously they are going to be a good side and we are not going to take them for granted in any way.

“It’s going to be a very tough game but within ourselves we know we are capable of getting a result.”

While he is missing out on vital club games, Lyons is grateful to the Bohs coaching staff of Keith Long and Trevor Croly for helping him achieve his club and country ambitions.

“It’s all down to Keith and Trevor, really showing faith in the young lads, and I’m grateful that they have shown faith in me,” said the former Naas AFC and St Joseph’s Boys youngster.

“I made my debut at 17, which I am grateful for. It makes you a better player, playing against good players in the league.

“It’s tough, but it develops you as a person and a player.

“And then the dressing room helps, with the experienced lads who have been around the league for nearly 20 years.

“They bring you along and help you and you improve every day.”

Lyons’ former Bohemians teammate Ali Reghba, now at Premier League side Leicester City, has backed head coach Tom Mohan to steer Ireland to the last-four.

“Tom Mohan, how great he has done with us? The only team to win six games in qualifying - that’s all through his tactics,” said Reghba.

“Even against the French, he put us out to play a certain way and we did it.

“They weren’t really looking like they’d score apart from long shots, until they got that late chance with the header.

“You can see how good a coach Tom is. He is an even better person.”
