Andros Townsend slams Crystal Palace Twitter account for "making fun" of Ashley Young

Andros Townsend has defended Ashley Young and slammed Crystal Palace's Twitter account for "making fun" of the Man Utd star.

Young, 34, was thrown into action against Palace as a first-half substitute on Saturday following an injury to Luke Shaw.

And the United veteran had the unenviable task of keeping tabs on pacey winger Wilfried Zaha - who is eight years his junior.

At one stage during the match, the pair were involved in a one-on-one down United's left-hand side, where Zaha twisted and turned several times causing Young to defend frantically.

The Palace Twitter account posted a video of the exchange, and said: "Wilf had him dancing."

Zaha's run saw him beat Young more than once, with his last piece of skill causing Young to fall to the turf.

But Townsend suggested the post showed disrespect to Young, who actually recovered to stop Zaha's cross getting into the United box.

Townsend said: "A 34 y/o ex winger vs one of the leagues best wingers.... he gets destroyed twice yet still manages to block the cross.... we should be applauding this not making fun of it #Respect ."

Zaha did eventually have the last laugh, as Palace ran out 2-1 winners over United at Old Trafford.

Daniel James looked to have rescued a point for United in the dying minutes when he levelled Jordan Ayew's 32nd minute opener.

But Patrick van Aanholt struck in injury time to ensure Palace sealed all three points.

Young could yet find himself called into action more often, after reports suggest Shaw will be ruled out for at least a month .

Shaw injured his hamstring in the fixture, which will likely cause him to miss England's first Euro 2020 qualifiers, as well as a number of crucial games for his club.

United's next fixtures during that period are against Southampton , Leicester , West Ham , Arsenal , Liverpool and Norwich.
