Andrew Luck’s next step: High school teacher?

As the Indianapolis Colts begin to move on from former franchise quarterback Andrew Luck, who announced his retirement from the league last weekend, many are wondering what might be next for the 29-year-old.

Luck has many hobbies. It’s anyone’s guess what Luck will be doing as he continues his rehab from a mysterious ankle injury. However, is there a chance teaching high school students is in the future for the former No. 1 overall pick?

While coaching or partaking in broadcasting might be the more popular choice, John Feinstein of The Washington Post believes there is a chance Luck becoming a high school teacher is the path that holds the most water.

Feinstein interviewed Luck in 2018 for a book that profiled quarterbacks. When Feinstein asked the question about what Luck might want to do with life after football, he said it was unlike the other answers he had received.

When I asked Luck the routine question in March 2018, he smiled almost sheepishly. “Honestly,” he said, “I think I could be very happy teaching high school history.”

That is an answer I’d never gotten before — or since.

Luck, of course, gave a Luck-like answer. Even though he attended Stanford for architecture, Luck has been widely known as a history buff.

During the press conference that shocked the world last weekend, Luck admitted that the cycle of pain, injuries and rehab have kept him from living the life he wants to live. Though he loves the game of football, the joy had been taken out of it.

“It’s been unceasing, unrelenting, both in-season and offseason, and I felt stuck in it,” Luck said during the press conference. “And the only way I see out is to no longer play football. It’s taken my joy of this game away and I’ve been stuck in this process (and) haven’t been able to live the life I want to live.”

We may never truly find out what is next for Luck until it already happens, but the former leader and face of the franchise is likely to excel in whatever it is he chooses to do.
