Andrea Radrizzani admitted Antonio Conte approach before Leeds United landed Marcelo Bielsa

Antonio Conte has been announced as new manager of Tottenham Hotspur today, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo who was sacked on Monday.

However, Andrea Radrizzani made an attempt to bring the ex-Chelsea manager back to England before, as the Leeds owner recognised the need for an elite coach to transform the side and win promotion to the Premier League.

Speaking in 2018, Radrizzani detailed his attempt to persuade the now Spurs manager to take control at Elland Road.

"I do not deny that I made an attempt for Conte, I have a weakness for him, I would have offered £20m too," the Leeds Chairman said to Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"With him, I was sure that promotion to the Premier League would have been assured."

However, he also mentioned that Claudio Ranieri - now manager of fellow Premier League side Watford - and Belgium boss Roberto Martinez were also looked at as options before the club appointed Marcelo Bielsa.

"There was an interview with Ranieri, an exquisite person. He was flattered by our interest, but at that moment he declined waiting for the right call.

"I also contacted Martinez, but there were not many margins because of his agreement with the Belgian national team."

Ultimately though, Bielsa arrived at Elland Road in the summer of 2018, with Radrizzani calling him 'one of the best in the world'.

Given the success that the Argentine has brought to the club in the last few years, it's clear that the right decision was made for all parties.
