A 38-year-old school teacher was stripped, thrashed and paraded naked in Eluru town of Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district on Tuesday night for allegedly raping and impregnating one of his students, police said on Wednesday.
A video, which is being widely shared on local media, shows a group of 15 to 20 people thrashing Kare Rambabu and parading him naked for more than a kilometre on the streets of the town.
Officials said Kare Rambabu, an English teacher in a private school, promised the Class 10 student good marks six months ago and allegedly raped her repeatedly during the period. He continued to sexually exploit the 16-year-old even after she cleared her Class 10 examinations in April this year and joined a polytechnic college.
The girl recently realised that she was pregnant and approached Rambabu to find a way out. He reportedly gave her some pills to terminate the pregnancy. When the girl developed severe health complications due to heavy bleeding, her parents admitted her to a hospital, where they came to know about the pregnancy.
“On questioning the girl, she told them how Rambabu had exploited her sexually. The enraged parents alerted other relatives and locals. On Tuesday night, they caught hold of him in his room and beat him up black and blue,” a police official said.
Police rushed to the spot and took Rambabu to the police station in a jeep. He was given a towel and shirt to cover himself. They said Rambabu, who belongs to Kurnool district, had been living in Eluru for the last six years. They added his wife and two children separated from him two years ago because of his alleged bad behaviour.
Rambabu admitted he was in a sexual relationship with the minor girl.
“Her relatives came to my house in the name of talks. They pulled me out and thrashed me mercilessly,” he said.
Police registered a case of rape under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code along with various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
