TIRUPATI: Police on Thursday arrested two con men accused of duping several elected representatives in the twin Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over the past several years.
They unsuccessfully tried to dupe Tirupati MP M Gurumoorthy on January 14, by posing as calling from the CMO and informing him that Centre had sanctioned 5 crore to Tirupati Lok Sabha constituency and asked him to transfer 25 lakh as challan charges.
The MP immediately lodged a police complaint, following which cops zeroed in on Thota Balaji Naidu and Mekala Abhishek. Naidu, an ex-NTPC staffer, met Abhishek while they were in jail and the duo hatched a plan to trap elected representatives using central government schemes as a bait.
Since 2010, they have duped several people in two Telugu states to the tune of 70 lakh.
