Andersonstown Road PSNI incident being investigated by Ombudsman

The Police Ombudsman is calling for witnesses after a ‘man in his 50s was restrained’ by a number of officers.

Details of the incident have not been revealed in the watchdog’s statement, other than to say it occurred in the Andersonstown Road area of West Belfast earlier this month.

They say investigators have “appealed for witnesses to an incident involving police and a member of the public on Belfast’s Andersonstown Road on Wednesday 2 June 2021”.

The Ombudsman statement adds that a “man in his 50s was restrained by a number of police officers during the incident, which happened close to the Gem Costcutter store between 2pm and 3pm”.

A Police Ombudsman spokesman said: “We have received a complaint about police actions and would appeal to anyone who saw or may have recorded video footage of what happened to contact us.

“Messages can be left at any time by calling 0800 032 7880, and we can also be contacted during normal working hours on 028 9082 8658 (9-5pm, Monday to Friday).”
