Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Gujarat lead in govt’s startup ranking exercise

NEW DELHI: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Gujarat have emerged as the best performing states in the second edition of ranking of India’s startup ecosystem by the department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT).

The ranking is done to encourage states to work proactively to boost the startup ecosystem. Gujarat continued to remain in the top spot, ahead of states such as Karnataka, known as India’s startup hub.

The startup ranking framework 2019 for states has seven broad reform areas comprising 30 action points such as institutional support, easing compliance, relaxation in public procurement norms, incubation support, and venture funding support.

“An evaluation committee comprising independent experts from the startup ecosystem carried out a detailed assessment of responses across various parameters. Many parameters involved getting feedback from beneficiaries over 60,000 calls made in 11 different languages to empathetically connect with beneficiaries to ascertain the real pulse at the implementation level," DPIIT had said on Friday.

The top performers were Karnataka and Kerala. Bihar, Maharashtra, Odisha, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan were in the ‘leader’ category, while Uttarakhand, Haryana, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Punjab, and Telangana, were named aspiring leaders.
