Ancient bridge discovered as heatwave dries reservoir

A scorching summer period and a lack of rainfall has revealed a stunning ancient bridge at a reservoir. The structure became exposed after the extreme weather this week caused water to dry up.

One solitary figure was spotted walking across the old Road Bridge at Baitings Reservoir, near Ripponden, in West Yorkshire. It comes as Britain baked in record-breaking temperatures.

Such was the heat that the Met Office issued a rare red weather warning. The predicted a possible loss of life as the mercury exceeded 40C.

Some beauty spots across the north even dried up so severely that mudbeds were exposed and left deep cracks appearing in a desert-like landscape. But even though the temperatures have dropped and the region has had some rainfall in recent days, water levels are still low, leaving neolithic and bronze age remains exposed.

Built in 1956, Baitings Reservoir is a large water supply reservoir operated by Yorkshire Water. It is surrounded by woodland and popular with walkers and at various points offers impressive views of the neighbouring moors.
