An Post considering moving its GPO headquarters across O'Connell street to Clerys

An Post is considering moving its famed GPO headquarters across O'Connell street to the new Clerys Quarter.

Plans are in currently in place to carry out an extensive refurbishment of the General Post Office as it has not been properly upgraded since the 80s.

And as part of those plans, five sites are being considered for the Irish postal service.

The Irish Times reports that among the locations on the list are the North Docks offices, the Dublin docklands, the Exo building at Point Village and Dublin Airport Central.

An Post staff are understood to have a preference for being based in a location in Dublin city centre.

The GPO is understood to need extensive mechanical and engineering repair works as well as a redesign of the interior.

Some of the issues with the historic landmark - which played a central roll in the Easter Rising - at present include difficulties with plumbing, overcrowding, air quality and temperature control.

A spokesman for An Post told the publication: "This will enable an expert group to fully assess all available options in order to make a fully informed decision.

"It is planned to relocate to an alternative, modern headquarter building, on either a temporary or permanent basis, by the fourth quarter of 2020.

"An Post will continue to work with its group of unions throughout the process."

The decision will not affect the public post office located at the GPO or the Witness History Museum.
