An exciting new Thai barbecue restaurant has opened in Manchester

An ultra-modern Thai restaurant has thrown open its doors in Manchester city centre this week.

Food at District is cooked over a wood-fired barbecue, with a small cocktail bar tucked away in the basement.

The restaurant has taken over an old off-licence on Oldham Street and turned the space into a futuristic venue with white tiles and pink lighting.

The new concept comes from the same team behind the nearby Japanese restaurant Tokyo Ramen.

It's been inspired by the fire-and barbecue-lined streets of Bangkok, where skewers of meat are cooked over coals.

There are two set menus to choose from at District - one a £40 introduction to their food, the other a longer experience priced at £85.

Small plates of barbecued meat and fish, served in sticky glazes and spicy curries, are interspersed with snacks like mini 'tacos' and homemade jelly sweets.

Dishes on the full menu include beef short rib in red curry with smoked coconut cream, and sticky chicken wings in a caramel glaze made with fish sauce.

For dessert it's a District take on the classic Thai pudding of mango with sticky rice - theirs is made with caramelised coconut and topped with puffed rice.

Owner Danny Collins said: "We wanted to add to the dining experiences available in the Northern Quarter, bringing something different but accessible.

"We don’t want dining to be a quick in-out job.

"Restaurants can be a place to spend a whole evening, at a pace that really allows you to relax."

District is now open at 60 Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter.
