Amy Pieters: Cycling champion in induced coma after training ride fall

Dutch cyclist Amy Pieters has been put into an induced coma after falling from her bike during a training camp in Alicante.

Pieters - who is the Dutch national road champion - lost consciousness following the incident and was subsequently rushed to hospital via air ambulance.

Following the fall this week Dutch Cycling have confirmed that the rider remains in a coma with an assessment set to be made on her in ‘the coming days’.

During the statement they went on to confirm that the cyclist underwent surgery on Thursday evening which ‘relieved pressure on her head’ however she would ‘remain asleep for the next few days’.

Dutch Cycling said: “During Thursday night's surgery at the hospital in Alicante, the doctors relieved the pressure in her head that had been caused by the fall.

“Amy Pieters will be kept asleep for the next few days. Only if the doctors let her wake up in a few days, an estimate can be made of the possible damage.

“Representatives of the family and the KNWU have traveled to the hospital. Aftercare is provided for the other members of the track team.”

Earlier in the statement the governing body offered their thoughts to Pieters’ family and close ones, writing: “Of course, our thoughts are with Amy and her loved ones at the moment.”

Pieters has enjoyed a remarkably successful year on her bike, as she became Madison world champion alongside Kirsten Wild, as well as winning the Dutch National Road Race.
