Amy Macdonald has called for social media giants to prevent “faceless” trolls from making artists’ lives a misery, by forcing all users to register their personal details.
The singer-songwriter, 33, said social media benefited performers to instantly connect with fans, but she said it also allowed others to spread hatred.
Speaking on the BBC Alba documentary God Save the Quine, to be shown on New Year’s Day at 9pm, she said: “Being able to say my new album’s coming out and you can instantly reach a million people that are following you because they like you, that’s an amazing thing.
“But it also gives people a direct link to you and there are a lot of people that just use social media to be horrible and to just direct hate at people.
“That side of it I think we could improve so easily by just making people register properly on these websites.”
Amy added: “There are just too many faceless accounts.”
