Amazon Alexa down as thousands of users say devices are crashing

Users across the UK are reporting issues with Amazon Alexa with thousands saying the popular device keeps crashing.

But many have told of other problems, including being unable to turn off their alarm clocks.

Some have even struggled to turn on and off lights at their home - with others not able to use voice commands on the product.

Alexa is simply responding to some voice requests with an error message, saying: "Sorry, something went wrong."

Almost 8,000 people have reported issues with Alexa this morning via Downdetector, and the number is growing rapidly.

People have taken to social media to vent their frustrations at the issues (Amazon)

Although Amazon's service status dashboard reports no issues with its Web Services cloud platform, Alexa owners are complaining on twitter following a morning of disrupted service.

“This morning we had an issue that impacted some Alexa customers’ ability to interact with the service. The Alexa service is now operating normally” an Amazon spokesperson said.

Those trying to wake their Amazon Echo speakers are said to have been met with a red ring of light.

One user wrote on social media: "My whole house relies on Alexa for lighting, heating, security, doors etc - I'm sitting in a dark house in the cold and the door wont open."

Another posted: "What is going on with Alexa I am seeing so many people with problems."

A third posted: "My toddler is fuming as he wanted Happy and You Know it on repeat and Alexa is having none of it!"

Reports suggest that Alexa is also down across parts of Europe and India.

Alexa is Amazon's artificial intelligence voice assistant which makes tasks around the house so much easier.

It can be used with a smart speaker or a range of other devices to do things like browse the web, order products, control smart home appliances, and much more.

However, Alexa relies on connection to Amazon Web Services, which may be the cause of its problems this morning.

Just before 9.30am, a number of users took to twitter to reported their Alexa device is back up and running.

One user on Downdetector said: "Yep we're back up and running now! I can resume work!! Will find an alternative though so if this happens again we can still get our job's done!"
