Amazing update on Dominic Matteo's recovery shared on social media after life-saving surgery

A friend of Dominic Matteo has shared a positive update on his recovery from a brain tumour, a month after life-saving surgery.

The 45-year-old was taken ill last month, and underwent an operation at Leeds General Infirmary to remove the tumour.

Liverpool FC broke the news, with thousands of football fans sending messages of support to the former Whites captain.

"My new hero", wrote friend Peter McDowall on Twitter.

"A month after life-saving surgery he's been on the treadmill running every day this week.

"What a man."

The tweet included a photo of Matteo on his hospital bed with a thumbs up to the camera.

Matteo turned out more 146 times for Leeds following his arrival from Liverpool in 2000, with his legendary goal against AC Milan at the San Siro still sung about at every home game.

The Scotland international quickly became a key part of David O'Leary's side, playing a huge role in their 2000-01 Champions League run before the club dropped out of the Premier League in 2004, which brought about the departure of Matteo and the club's other high-earner.
