Amateur League 2020/21 season cancelled amid ongoing coronavirus restrictions

The 2020/21 Amateur League season has been cancelled amid ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

League chairman Terry Pateman announced the decision on Thursday night saying there was "no longer a reliable path" to complete the campaign in the necessary time frame.

The 2020/21 season had yet to begin due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, with all non-elite sport to remain in lockdown until at least April 1.

"I appreciate that this has been a difficult year both on and off the field for everyone. My thanks go to you all for your patience," Pateman said in a statement.

"The League Committee has sought to explore a number of different avenues to support the playing of League football and also to allow plenty of time for any decision as opposed to a hasty choice.

"However, the recent restrictions and the level of uncertainty have led us to conclude that, despite our best efforts, there is no longer a reliable path to allow Season 2020/2021 to complete in the timeframes available.

"The Committee has therefore cancelled the season 2020/2021, which includes all league and cup matches, using Rule 19 of the NAFL Rules.

"I regret also that the Britton Rosebowl game has also been cancelled following discussions with our Scottish counterparts. They face the same challenges as we all do.

"We feel that the time is right to place the focus on Season 2021/2022 being played safely and reliably. We look forward to moving beyond the current problems and to enthusiastically plan to play and watch the game that we all love.

"We will aim to start in early August 2021 (restrictions permitting) for the First Division teams and in September 2021 for Second and Third Division teams."
