Amanda Holden to coach Welsh choir ahead of King Charles' coronation concert

Amanda Holden and Motsi Mabuse will form part of a line-up of celebrity coaches mentoring a new choir including Welsh singers ahead of their performance in front of the King and Queen Consort at next month's Coronation Concert. A new BBC programme, 'Sing For The King: The Search For The Coronation Choir' will explore how 300 singers came together from different backgrounds to perform at the concert in May.

Some big names are set to mentor the singers as part of the new one-off documentary, including choirmaster Gareth Malone, Strictly Come Dancing judge Mabuse, Britain’s Got Talent judge Holden and actress Rose Ayling-Ellis. The four celebrities will draw on “their individual areas of expertise” to “challenge and inspire the choirs to give a pitch-perfect performance”, the BBC said.

The Coronation Choir’s final group includes among others an all-deaf sign performance organisation, a traditional male voice choir from Caerphilly, Yorkshire’s only female South Asian choir, the London Fire Brigade and a troupe of RNLI sea shanty singers from Portishead, Somerset.

The end of the documentary sees the choir meet at Windsor Castle to perform together for the first time ahead of the concert on Sunday, May 7. The event will take place the day after Charles III and Camilla are crowned at Westminster Abbey. Other programmes will be released in the run-up to the coronation, including 'Stitching For Britain,' in which The Great British Sewing Bee judge Patrick Grant looks at how manufacturers Kashket & Partners are providing parade uniforms for the coronation.

Huge crowds are expected to converge on London for the coronation on May 6. The coronation will begin at 11.15am at Westminster Abbey and Charles, now 74, will be the oldest person in British history to be crowned. It is expected that 2,000 guests will attend as the new King has reportedly elected to have a cheaper, shorter 'slimmed-down' ceremony due to the fact he's "very aware" of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis in the UK.

Charlotte Moore, chief content officer at the BBC, said: “The coronation is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to mark history with an unparalleled breadth of programmes. We will have something to enthral all audiences, from the pageantry to the procession and the concert, and bring everyone together to celebrate and to share in the significance of the occasion.”

Sing For The King: The Search For The Coronation Choir has a release date of Friday May 5.
