Suede is hardly the obvious choice for an Italian summer, but Amal Clooney made the substantial fabric look surprisingly suited to the season during a July 14 outing in Capri.
The 48-year-old human rights lawyer stepped out in a vintage Thierry Mugler two-piece while visiting the Italian island with her husband, George Clooney. Combining sculptural construction, saturated earth tones and abundant fringe, the archival ensemble brought a distinctly 1970s sensibility to the couple's coastal excursion.

Inside Amal Clooney's Vintage Mugler Look
Clooney's set consisted of a crisscross suede halter top and a coordinating midi skirt trimmed with long fringe. Its patchwork construction combined brown, orange and teal suede, creating a graphic effect that stood out against Capri's sunlit coastal setting.
She completed the look with metallic gold wedge sandals by Rixo, oversized sunglasses and a brown Aquazzura tote featuring leather cutout detailing. Loose waves and minimal jewelry kept the attention on the texture and movement of the Mugler pieces.
George, 65, complemented her warm-toned outfit in a white polo shirt, pale gray trousers and light-colored loafers. The couple was photographed during a yacht outing that included a visit to Villa Bragaglia, a historic Capri property.
Why Suede Worked in the Summer Heat
The outfit's success came down to its construction. Although suede can appear heavy, the open-back halter exposed enough skin to balance the weight of the material. The skirt's moving fringe also gave the ensemble an airier quality than a conventional solid suede silhouette.
Its palette helped bridge the seasons. Brown provided an autumnal base, while orange and teal introduced the brighter color expected from a Mediterranean vacation wardrobe. Metallic wedges added another point of light without competing with the already detailed clothing.
The result was less traditional resortwear than a carefully adapted vintage look—one that used cut, color and movement to make an unconventional summer fabric feel appropriate.
Amal Clooney's Growing Vintage Archive
Clooney has increasingly incorporated archival fashion into her public wardrobe. Her recent selections have included vintage Versace, Galliano-era Dior and Alexander McQueen designs, placing her among the public figures helping bring past runway collections back into contemporary fashion coverage.
In May, she attended the King's Trust 50th-anniversary celebration in an archival Alexander McQueen gown from the designer's Spring 2007 collection. The gold-lined, embellished dress had previously been worn by Cameron Diaz nearly two decades earlier.
The Mugler set continues that pattern while showing a more relaxed side of Clooney's archival dressing. Rather than reserving vintage fashion for formal events, she styled the suede separates for a daytime vacation outing.
It was an unexpected summer choice, but that was precisely what made it effective: Clooney treated the archival design as clothing to be worn, not merely preserved.
