Almost half of all burglaries in 2018 happened in Dublin

Almost half of burglaries in Ireland last year happened in Dublin.

Despite this, there was a 11.5% decrease in burglaries nationwide in 2018.

In Dublin, there was an eight percent average decrease with a three percent fall in North Dublin and 11% fall in the south of the capital.

A burglary takes place in Ireland every 31 minutes, a new analysis by PhoneWatch reveals.

Ireland's busiest garda station for burglaries is also in the capital - Dundrum, with 456.

Eoin Dunne, Managing Director of PhoneWatch said: “This significant decrease in the rate of burglary is extremely welcome, and it is very positive to see that after an increase in 2017 the rate fell once again last year.

"However burglary remains unfortunately all too common and should highlight to every householder the importance of taking sensible security precautions on a daily basis.

“A monitored alarm continues to be among the most effective ways to protect homes.

“Ultimately protecting your home is about doing the basics consistently so that you don’t leave your home vulnerable.

"This includes, locking windows and doors, especially when you leave the house. Making sure your home is well lit and appears occupied, particularly between 5 and 11pm when burglary is most common.

"Not leaving garden equipment lying around, with ladders the most important to secure. Avoiding updates on Social media, such as Facebook, about your plans.”
