Almost a fifth of Dubliners don't know how to use social media privacy settings

Almost two thirds of social media users in Ireland are worried about their privacy - and almost a fifth of Dubliners don't know how to customise their settings.

Around 65% of people using sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are concerned about who can see their posts.

In Leinster, 21% of people don't know how to make their pages private - with 19% of Dubs struggling to set privacy settings.

The research was carried out on Irish Facebook users, and shows that those born after 1997 are most familiar with customising their privacy settings.

Of this age group, 77% have customised their settings, while only half of those over 55 have done the same.

A third of Irish social media users don’t know how to manage the personal information they display on Facebook while 29% don’t know how to control who sees their photos.

Gareth Lambe, Head of Facebook Ireland said:  “Millions of Irish people use social media to connect and share with friends and family, but many are concerned about who is able to see what they post online.

"We want people to have more control of their experience on Facebook and know about the many new tools and features we’ve introduced to help manage their privacy.

"Doing a privacy check-up is quick and easy – but if you’re unsure how, then head down to one of our pop up cafes. We can help you personalise your privacy settings – and all in the time it takes to make a cup of coffee.”

The Dublin pop-up shop will take place from Monday 21 to Tuesday 22 October in Network at 39 Aungier St, Dublin 2 between 8am to 4pm.
