Ally McCoist responds to Question of Sport return suggestion as Rangers legend heaps praise on axed Sue Barker

Ally McCoist has paid tribute to Question of Sport host Sue Barker after news broke that she was to leave the show.

Barker, along with team captains Phil Tuffnel and Matt Dawson, will no longer be a part of the long-running programme after the BBC decided they wanted to change the setup.

And Rangers legend McCoist heaped praise on Barker after spending 11 years as a team captain between 1996 and 2007, when he left to return to Ibrox as assistant manager under Walter Smith.

Barker spent 23 years as the host and McCoist insists she has no anger at being let go as he revealed details of a conversation he had with her about her exit.

He told talkSPORT: "I've got to say I absolutely loved it, it was just fantastic and I was captain for 11 or 12 years. It was amazing.

"The opportunity to sit there and meet your sporting heroes, dear me. Seve Ballesteros, Marvin Hagler, John McEnroe, it was just absolutely amazing.

"I've got to say, I spoke to Sue (Barker) on a text message about a week or 10 days ago and she told me it was happening. I've got to say, she was absolutely brilliant and as philosophical as you would expect. Not a bit of anger or even disappointment, it was just more thanks for the time she had there.

Rangers legend Ally McCoist will take part in the For the Love of Scotland event (SNS Group)

"We were talking about it and she was saying she's got fantastic memories and she was just thankful she sat in that position. The woman is just class from start to finish.

"It's like anything else, times change and things move on and they decided it was going to be a new set up."

McCoist was pushed on whether he would be willing to return to the Question of Sport studio in some capacity in the new set up and he was quick to joke: "In answer to your question, yes! Give me my job back.

"No I'm joking."
