Ally McCoist predicts Rangers boss Steven Gerrard's future as he floats 'Frank Sinatra' scenario

Ally McCoist suggests Steven Gerrard might not want to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool because he is too tough an act to follow.

The Rangers boss has been tipped to eventually return to his former club when the German manager leaves Anfield.

But Ibrox legend McCoist doesn't believe it's a foregone conclusion because of the ex-Dortmund man's sustained success with the Reds. Liverpool claimed the Champions League last year and are on course to winning the Premier League this season for the first time in 30 years.

The pundit insists the timing might not suit Gerrard because he's witnessed the likes of David Moyes fail after following Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

Asked if he thinks Gerrard will replace Klopp when his Light Blues contract expires in 2024, he said on talkSPORT : "Not necessarily. Not straight away.

"From where I am sitting right now, and the job Jurgen Klopp has done, it might be in Steven's interest to follow the man that follows Jurgen. Do you know what I'm saying? As crazy as it sounds.

"Clearly you can't pick and choose when you are going to manage great clubs. But it's a wee bit like the Alex Ferguson syndrome, do you want the job after Sir Alex? It's like Frank Sinatra handing you the microphone. How do you follow that?

"Liverpool fans would love to see Gerrard back at the club and that might be the case. And if it's what Steven wants then I hope that is the case.

"But he's a very intelligent man, he knows he has a lot of work to do."

Gerrard guided Rangers into the last 16 of the Europa League with an impressive win against Braga on Wednesday night.

And although McCoist believes Gerrard has returned the feel-good factor to Govan, he insists Rangers fans will be expecting a trophy sooner rather than later.

He added: "It's been a tough ride for them the past years, but clearly there has been an incredible support and a massive improvement.

"Now is the time Rangers supporters will be looking to win something. "
