Ally McCoist answers 'underwhelming' Russell Martin Rangers question

Ally McCoist has delivered his verdict on Russell Martin's potential appointment as Rangers' new head coach.

The 39-year-old has been widely linked with the Ibrox hotseat in recent days.

The Rangers Review revealed yesterday that while the club has yet to offer the role to any prospective appointee, Martin is the likelier candidate to replace Philippe Clement in the dugout.

He has previously taken charge of MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton.

Quizzed on the potential arrival of Martin at Edmiston Drive, Rangers legend McCoist outlined the urgent need for a new permanent boss: "It’s imperative it gets done ASAP," he said live on talkSport

"However, it was never, ever going to get done before the sale of the club and the new owners came in."

A consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises last week acquired a 51 per cent stake in Rangers, and immediately invested £20 million into the club.

Martin could well be their man, and McCoist was pressed on whether his appointment would be 'underwhelming'. He said: "He [Martin] came up for a while - but that is the term that was used, underwhelming. But you have got to give him a chance."

Rangers' new sporting director, Kevin Thelwell, revealed on Monday that the club hoped to appoint a new head coach in the coming days.

He said: "It’s a great honour to be joining Rangers, particularly at such an exciting moment in the club’s history.

"While there has been significant work going on in the background prior to my arrival, that naturally accelerates from today, and top of the priority list will be the appointment of a new Head Coach for our men’s first-team.

"That search has been progressing well, and the club and I look forward to bringing that to a conclusion in the coming days.

"This is a new chapter for Rangers, and while we recognise success won’t come easy, our goal is clear: we need to win.

"My focus is on delivering that, with discipline and ambition. We’ll give everything to move this club forward as quickly and sustainably as we can."
