Ally McCoist and the Rangers nickname he bestowed upon Terry Butcher's left peg

Rangers legend Ally McCoist loved Terry Butcher's laser-guided service to the Ibrox strikers so much he named the defender's left foot 'the Winchester'.

McCoist enjoyed four years alongside England captain Butcher between 1986 and 1990 before he left for Coventry City.

Signed as one of Graeme Souness' first big name captures from south of the border, Butcher would lead Gers to three consecutive titles along with two League Cups.

McCoist took a moment to wish him a happy birthday on the airwaves – and revealed the rifle-themed nickname.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "Listen boys, what a skipper.

"I used to call big Lofty's left peg 'the Winchester'.

"Honestly, see if you made a wee run inside that inside left channel, he'd drop it on a plate for you, man.

"He'd just pull the trigger, bang!

"What a striker of a ball, that's right, England legend Terry Butcher.

"Happy birthday big fella, 63 today. Hope you have a great day with Rita and the boys."
