A man has been charged with abusing children over a 12-year period in NSW.

A police strike force began investigating in August after allegations were made of sexual and indecent assaults in the state's Southern Highlands region from 2000 to 2012.

Police say five children aged between six and 17 were abused during that time.

A 39-year-old man was on Monday arrested when police searched a home at Welby, near Mittagong where electronic devices were also seized.

The man was charged with 17 offences including sexual intercourse without consent and multiple charges of aggravated indecent and sexual assault of a person under 16.

He was refused bail on Monday will face Moss Vale Local Court again on December 19.

Investigations continue and police have asked anyone who believes they may have been abused by the same man to come forward.
