Allardyce predicts summer transfer for Kalvin Phillips which would affect Declan Rice deal

Former Leeds United interim boss Sam Allardyce has suggested Kalvin Phillips could leave Manchester City after just a single season as part of a blockbuster summer deal for Declan Rice. Phillips made 21 appearances but was restricted to just a handful of starts as Pep Guardiola's side enjoyed an historic campaign.

Speculation has inevitably mounted over the 27-year-old's future at the Etihad, with Liverpool and Newcastle United among those recently linked with former Leeds' star. However, Allardyce has suggested Phillips could be on his way to the capital as part of a deal for his midfield partner for England during the run to the Euro 2020 final.

Rice is expected to leave West Ham this summer after helping David Moyes' team to UEFA Europa Conference League success. Arsenal are believed to be the frontrunners for the 24-year-old's signature, although recent reports now stress City have emerged as contenders to sign the midfielder.

Allardyce has predicted the West Ham captain will join the treble winners over the Premier League runners-up, with one of Guardiola's star-studded squad heading the 'other way'. The ex-England boss was joined by Tim Sherwood in the discussion over Rice's future, and the pundit disagreed with the assessment.

Naming Arsenal as Rice's next destination, Sherwood then told William Hill's podcast: "(It) won't be Rodri. Pep will give him (Phillips) a chance." However, Allardyce nodded at the mention of Phillips' name, suggesting he would be the makeweight in the transfer.

Arsenal have seen their opening offer for Rice turned down, with the Hammers said to be holding out for a transfer in excess of £100 million. West Ham chairman David Sullivan confirmed following the Europa Conference League final victory over Fiorentina that the midfielder had likely played his final match for the club.
