Allan Saint-Maximin and Lyon share brilliant Twitter thread as Newcastle star makes Shaqiri joke

Allan Saint-Maximin has identified a Newcastle United supporter as a Xherdan Shaqiri lookalike in a hilarious tweet, which Lyon have subsequently responded to.

The Magpies star has endeared himself to supporters with his charisma off the field as well as his exploits on the pitch, and has once again left fans amused on social media.

The 24-year-old shared a photograph on Twitter of him embracing a group of supporters at St James' Park following his goal vs Leeds United, underneath a caption reading: "Sometimes people forget why they started to love football, I never will, thank you for the love lads."

He soon recognised one of the supporters in the picture resembled Lyon winger Shaqiri, prompting him to share the photograph again and tweet 'I just hope brother Shaqiri will be back in time for PSG-OL'.

The game he referred to was last night's Ligue 1 clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon, which ended in a 2-1 win for the former.

Following Saint-Maximin 's comment, Lyon's official account tweeted a starting line-up graphic with an image of the Newcastle supporter's face placed above Shaqiri's name.

The tweet read: "He made it!"

At a time when animosity is rife at Newcastle, Saint-Maximin's light-hearted exchange with Lyon provided supporters with something to laugh about.

He has been a standout performer in black and white since he arrived in the Premier League back in 2019 and recently scored an equaliser which denied Leeds victory at St James' Park.

Newcastle, however, have struggled in the early stages of the campaign and are yet to pick up a single Premier League victory.

Steve Bruce's side were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by their top flight counterparts Burnley, but Saint-Maximin has been a bright spark and earned plaudits across the media for his display in the draw with Leeds.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville said: "He’s (Saint-Maximin) a massive threat, he does everything you don’t want him to do as a defender. He creates chance after chance after chance. He gets fans on the edge of their seat and he really is someone the Newcastle fans can be excited about."
