Allan Rich dead: Serpico actor dies aged 94 after being blacklisted by Hollywood

Actor Allan Rich has died at the age of 94.

The star of film and stage, who appeared in Serpico and Quiz Show, famously managed to claw his way back into showbusiness after being blacklisted by Hollywood in the post-war era.

Allan's acting career began at the tender of age of nine, but his rising star was dealt a huge blow when he joined the Theatrical Action Committee to Free Willie McGee, a black man who was convicted of rape in 1945 in Mississippi and executed in 1951.

His involvement in the campaign led to Allan being labelled a communist sympathiser with studio producers turning their backs on him in unison.

The term Hollywood Blacklist was coined to deny any entertainment professionals the chance to work in the industry after being suspected of having communist links - with Allan being one of the names on the infamous list.

After being shunned by Hollywood in the 1950's, Allan took a job as a stockbroker in New York but was given another shot at acting in the 1960s.

Director Sidney Lumet hired him to star in his 1973 film Serpico, alongside Al Pacino.

The crime thriller was a huge commercial success, which Allan then followed up with an appearance in Quiz Show with Robert Redford.

Allan later starred in A League of Old Men, My Sexiest Year and The Last Word.

He also had a string of small screen credits in TV shows including CSI, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Judging Amy.

According to Variety, Allan died on Saturday at the Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, New Jersey after a battle with dementia.
