All the covid rules changing this Monday in Scotland as free lateral flow testing ends

Covid restrictions in Scotland are easing to the most relaxed we've seen them since the pandemic started in 2020.

As we move to 'living with Covid-19', the Scottish Government have confirmed a number of changes will take place from Monday April 18.

Changes to testing has been announced and the law regarding face masks will change.

Scotland has been the last country in the UK to lift the mandatory law regarding face masks.

This comes after reports have suggested that infection rates have lowered, but there are still over 5,000 daily cases being recorded across Scotland.

Nicola Sturgeon has warned that although rules and laws are lifting, they can be reintroduced if necessary.

Here's what to expect from Monday.

Face masks

As of Monday, face masks will no longer be mandatory by law on public transport, shops and other indoor settings.

However, the Scottish Government does still "strongly recommend" mask wearing in indoor areas and public transport.

As the Daily Record reports, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "In recent weeks we have seen steady progress as we move back to a greater sense of normality and a more sustainable way of managing this virus.

"However our NHS is still under pressure and the most vulnerable members of our society can still benefit from additional measures to protect them from the virus.

"That is why although the use of face coverings will become guidance rather than a legal requirement I strongly recommend members of the public continue wearing face coverings in indoor settings where possible, and particularly when significant numbers of people are present."

Covid-19 testing and free lateral flow tests

Also from Monday, lateral flow tests will no longer be free from the NHS website. They will be available to be bought from supermarkets and pharmacies for £2.

This comes as the advice is lifting that asked people to take routine lateral flow tests twice a week, even if they weren't showing Covid-19 symptoms.

Asymptomatic testing in schools and universities will also end on this date.

If you show Covid symptoms it is still mandatory to self-isolate and book a PCR test, although this is set to change after April 30.

Close contacts of positive cases who are fully vaccinated should continue to do LFTs for seven days.
