All Star Musicals: Fern Britton's This Morning feud and split with famous husband

Fern Britton will return to our screens on Boxing Day for All Star Musicals.

The ITV show will see the presenter take centre stage with five other celebrities as they face the ultimate musical theatre masterclass.

Fern received training from West End choreographers and vocal coaches ahead of her performance on the show, which is hosted by John Barrowman.

Sneak previews released from the episode show Fern has undergone a glamorous transformation as the 64-year-old dazzles in a sparkling purple outfit while performing a routine from Mamma Mia.

Fern's stint on the programme is the latest chapter in her illustrious TV career which began in 1980 while working at Plymouth's Westward Television.

She quickly sky-rocketed to the top of broadcasting and became the BBC's youngest ever national news presenter when she joined Breakfast Time.

Fern eventually moved to ITV to host GMTV in 1993 and frequently guest hosted This Morning throughout the 90s.

The broadcaster was offered a full time gig on Friday's edition of the show in 1999 before she became the main hosts of ITV's flagship daytime programme three years later.

Phillip Schofield replaced John Leslie as Fern's co-host a few months later and the two fronted the programme up until 2009 when she stunningly quit the show.

Fern and Phil seemed like the best of friends during their seven years at the helm, but things were actually far from perfect.

The presenters admitted they argued during their time on the show and beyond, with Phil saying one heated conversation was probably the final straw.

At the time she quit, Fern's friends claimed she felt "undervalued by ITV" and she was "living in Phil's shadow".

There were also claims she had found out she was being paid £250,000 a year less than her co-host, and reports Phil was earning three times Fern's salary when the duo were presenting Mr and Mrs together.

It was claimed he picked up £45,000 an hour while Fern earned £15,000, but Fern firmly denied that she made the decision to leave This Morning because of salaries.

She told The Irish Daily Mail : "I never discussed with Phillip what he and I were earning. I was happy doing the show and happy with my salary,"

When she announced she was leaving This Morning, Fern addressed the whole This Morning team and didn't mention her co-host specifically.

And when Phil was interviewed by Heat four years later he admitted he and Fern no longer chatted.

Since she left This Morning, Fern has gone on to become a novelist and star on programmes including Pointless Celebrities, Strictly Come Dancing - and her own show, My Cornwall with Fern Britton.

Away from the screen, she was married to TV executive Clive Jones from 1988 - 2000 and had three children together.

A year later, Fern started dating celebrity chef Phil Vickery after meeting on the set of Ready Steady Cook.

The couple eventually married and had a daughter named Winnie, before they announced their separation in January 2020.

According to The Mirror, Fern told Good Housekeeping how the split capped off a tough three years, but she is now looking towards the future as she builds a new life in Cornwall.

She said: "I’m not afraid of change…The last three years have been very hard. I lost my parents, I lost my marriage.

"I lost my other home in Buckinghamshire, too, because Phil lives there now and I’m in Cornwall.

"The magic I’ve found here is incredible. I’ve made some wonderful girlfriends, that’s been a lovely surprise.”

All Star Musicals will air on December 26 at 8pm on ITV and ITV Hub
