“All I want to do is keep doing this”: Taylor Swift makes Grammys history, as female-dominated awards also honour Boygenius, Miley Cyrus, SZA and Billie Eilish

Boygenius and Taylor Swift.

Female winners took home the big prizes at this year’s Grammys with Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Boygenius, SZA and Miley Cyrus winning the highest-profile categories.

Swift, taking the prestigious album of the year for the fourth time (becoming the first person to do so in the process) said,  “I would love to tell you this is the happiest moment of my life but I feel this happy when I’ve finished a song. All I want to do is keep doing this.”

I’m not an attractive crier

SZA

Earlier, while picking up the best pop vocal album Grammy, she said, “This is my 13th Grammy, which is my lucky number. I don’t know if I’ve ever told you that?” While she was at it, Swift also announced a 19 April release for her 11th studio album, titled The Tortured Poets Department.

Best song of the year was Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For, from cultural steamroller Barbie. The track was also awarded best song written for visual media.  “Damn, that’s stupid guys!” Elish said. “That was a crazy list of incredible people. I’m shocked out of my balls.”

Miley Cyrus took home the record of the year and best solo pop performances, her first ever Grammy awards, for omnipresent global smash Flowers, saying “I really hope this doesn’t change anything as my life was beautiful yesterday.”

We were all delusional enough as kids to think this might happen to us one day

Lucy Dacus, Boygenius

SZA, who had gone into the night with nine nominations, took home three awards, including best R&B song for Snooze, giving a textbook emotional speech. “I came really, really far and I can’t believe this is happening,’ she said. “I’m not an attractive crier.”

Victoria Monét secured best new artist and best R&B album, gushing, “I just wanna say to everyone who has a dream, I want you to look at this as an example,” she said.

Meanwhile, in the rock and alternative categories, Boygenius swept up best rock performance, best alternative music album and best alternative music performance awards. Accepting the trio's first Grammy, Lucy Dacus recalled their early dreams. “We were all delusional enough as kids to think this might happen to us one day," she said.

“Phoebe would sing at Guitar Centre, hoping that she would get discovered, Julien was always in bands as a kid and wanted to play sold-out stadiums, and I would practice writing an acceptance speech and thank all the people that had been nice to me, like my bus driver and the guy that held the door at church.

“So I feel kind of like a kid because that was the last time something like this felt possible. This isn’t real.”

Accepting the prestigious producer of the year, non-classical award (again), Jack Antonoff said "Taylor Swift kicked that f***ing door open for me, because when a lot of people were saying: ‘Yeah, I love it, sounds great, now let’s get a producer to do it.’

“Everyone, in this room especially, knows that feeling when you hear something and say: ‘I love this’ and then there’s all these people saying: ‘No, it’s gotta go to a big name person.’
