All four UK nations to hold emergency Covid meeting on Wednesday

Communities Secretary Michael Gove will chair a Cobra meeting with the devolved administrations on Wednesday afternoon, the PA news agency understands.

The meeting will take place at around 5pm with representatives of the Scottish and Welsh Governments and the Northern Ireland Executive.

It comes amid speculation that tougher Covid rules may be about to be announced.

Further coronavirus restrictions may “potentially” be needed before Christmas to curb the spread of Omicron, Scotland's Deputy First Minister John Swinney has warned as a health expert advised the country needs “to be ready for the worst case scenario”.

Businesses are being urged to put measures in place to “step up” protections against the virus.

England's Health Secretary Sajod Javid has been warned that tougher measures are needed before this weekend to prevent excess strain on the NHS.

Experts say at the peak of the Omicron variant, which could come within four weeks, 2,000 people a day could be admitted to hospital.

There are fears England will now announce Plan C - which could include much tougher restrictions over Christmas and New Year.
