All-American final set in Dallas Open after straight-set victories

Marcos Giron

In an exciting display of skill and determination, second-seeded Tommy Paul and unseeded Marcos Giron emerged victorious in the semifinals of the Dallas Open, paving the way for an all-American final. Paul secured his spot in the final with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 win over the third-seeded Ben Shelton, while Giron continued his impressive run by defeating the fourth-seeded Adrian Mannarino of France in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

Giron, who stunned top-seeded American Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals, is vying for his first ATP Tour title in his second trip to a final. The 30-year-old has been in exceptional form, having defeated multiple seeded opponents throughout the tournament. This triumph has provided him with a fantastic opportunity to surpass his career-best ranking of 49th, achieved in 2022. Giron's previous final appearance occurred in San Diego, where he unfortunately fell short of claiming the title.

The first set of Giron's semifinal match against Mannarino saw him take an early 4-0 lead, showcasing his dominance on the court. In the second set, Giron's impressive shot-making skills were on full display when he made a phenomenal lunging save with a forehand, followed by a stunning backhand crosscourt passing shot to secure a 5-3 lead. Continuing his impeccable performance, Giron closed out the match comfortably on his serve, exemplifying his confidence and composure in crucial moments.

Paul, on the other hand, faced a formidable opponent in Shelton. However, he rose to the challenge with a well-executed game plan. Paul's superior break point conversion rate proved crucial in his 6-2, 6-4 victory. Moreover, the 26-year-old displayed his ability to save break points, successfully fending off all three faced throughout the match. This win was especially significant for Paul as he put an end to a six-match losing streak against top 20 opponents.

Reflecting on his performance, Paul acknowledged Shelton's incredible serve but credited the court conditions for aiding his own game. The hardcourts on the SMU campus provided him with opportunities to keep the ball within his strike zone, allowing him to play his shots effectively and ultimately come out on top.

Both Giron and Paul have experienced their fair share of successes and setbacks on their journeys to the final. Giron's earlier semifinal exit in Dallas two years ago has served as motivation for him, fueling his desire to deliver a different outcome this time around. Similarly, Paul has reached two finals in the past but fell short of clinching the title. Their previous experiences have taught them valuable lessons and provided them with the necessary determination to seize this opportunity.

The stage is now set for an all-American final in the Dallas Open, where Giron and Paul will battle it out for the coveted championship. With their impressive performances in the tournament so far, both players have proven their mettle and will undoubtedly put on a spectacular display of skill and sportsmanship. Tennis enthusiasts eagerly await the thrilling conclusion to this top-tier competition.
