Alisson's Liverpool stoppage time header replicated by fellow Brazilian keeper for Torquay United

Inspired by compatriot Alisson’s heroics for Liverpool at West Bromwich Albion last month, fellow Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Covolan headed in a 95 th minute goal for his side but unlike the Reds ace, his effort proved in vain.

When Alisson nodded in deep into stoppage time to secure a crucial 2-1 win for Liverpool against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on May 16 to keep Jurgen Klopp's side’s Champions League qualification bid alive, it was the first instance of a keeper scoring a headed goal in Premier League history.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Paul Robinson, Everton’s Tim Howard and Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic all netted with long kicks upfield.

While Aston Villa’s Peter Schmeichel and Blackburn Rovers’ Brad Friedel both scored with close range shots inside the opposition penalty areas.

However, following on from his countryman’s exploits in the Black Country, Covolan, who plays for Torquay United wandered forward to nod in a sensational last-gasp leveller against Hartlepool United in the National League play-off final at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate ground on Sunday.

Battling for a return to the Football League, the Devon side had already had two Kyle Cameron goals ruled out on a day of high drama and tension.

The game finished 1-1 after normal time and with 30 minutes of additional play unable to break the deadlock further, the match went to penalties.

Covolan, a 30-year-old from Curitiba in the state of Parana, who was a youth player with Vasco da Gama before previous spells in English non League football with Whitehawk, Lewes and Worthing, performed further heroics in the shoot-out, saving the first two kicks he faced.

But his side were ultimately beaten 5-4, with the contest going to sudden death before the County Durham outfit, managed by former Tranmere Rovers long-throw expert Dave Challinor triumphed.
