Alex Jones returns to The One Show four weeks after giving birth to baby daughter Annie

Alex Jones took a break from maternity leave to pay a one-off visit to The One Show sofa tonight.

The Ammanford -born presenter, who just weeks ago gave birth to her first girl baby Annie, returned to the BBC tea-time favourite to help unveil the programme's Garden of Hope at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Undertaking her "first outing from mum duties", the 44-year-old, who already has two sons with husband Charlie Thomson, said it was "so nice to be back" and that her "boys were taking to little Annie brilliantly".

Alex added that she'd left the baby back at home in London with her parents in order to highlight the talents of horticulturalist Arit Anderson, whose designs at the Royal Hospital Chelsea are meant to illustrate how the outdoors can provide support to people during difficult times.

Joined by co-presenters Jermaine Jenas and Ronan Keating, the trio also met with the Earl and Countess of Wessex and the Princess Royal.

Speaking on her Instagram earlier in the evening, Alex said: "I couldn’t have been there though without my parents who looked after Annie while I filmed. They are legends. Zooming now to BBC HQ to present tonight.

"Dipping my toe back for one night only but will we make it on time??!! London traffic is against us but crossing my fingers that I’ll be on that green sofa at 7pm."

The garden, which will be moved to a mother and baby unit in Kent after the flower show ends, proved a huge hit with the likes of famous visitors such as Dame Judy Dench and Radio Two DJ Jo Whiley who praised its serene atmosphere and colourful arrangement.

For Alex though, 'mum duties' were clearly still at the forefront of her mind.

"As a new mother my first thought was 'this would be a great place to breast feed'," she said.
