Set in Los Angeles, the film followed a young punk rocker entangled in a car repossession agency's quest for a mysterious Chevrolet Malibu, possibly linked to extraterrestrials.
Cox had previously attempted a sequel titled Repo Man: Otto’s Hawaiian Holiday, which faced challenges and was eventually shelved. However, it inspired a documentary and a graphic novel. Cox also created a low-budget spin-off, Repo Chick. Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer marks his second attempt to continue Otto Maddox's punk rock saga.
