Aleksandar Mitrovic set for 'lengthy ban' as Everton and Liverpool watch on

Fulham manager Marco Silva and striker Aleksandar Mitrovic have been charged by the Football Association (FA) following incidents around the 72nd minute of their FA Cup exit to Manchester United.

The Cottagers tactician was sent off during their 2-1 defeat to the Red Devils following a red card and subsequent penalty following an alleged handball by Willian. After the Brazilian was given his marching orders, the Serbian talisman was infuriated by the decision from on-field referee Chris Kavanagh.

Mitrovic appeared to nudge the official and express his frustration before a straight red card was brandished, reducing them to nine men.

Both Everton and Liverpool are due to face last season's Championship winners upon their restart from the March international break. The Blues will host Fulham in mid-April after clashes with Tottenham Hotspur and Erik ten Hag's side.

Silva and his men were due to travel to Anfield last weekend but their progression in the FA Cup forced the Premier League encounter to be rescheduled. A new date is yet to be confirmed, but there are several potential gaps in April and May.

However, it now looks clear that the attacker - who scored on the opening day in their 2-2 draw with the Reds - could be set for an extended period on the sidelines.

The Times' Martyn Ziegler reported that the 28-year-old is likely to face a "lengthy ban".

A statement published by the Twitter account, FA Spokesperson, read: "Fulham, Marco Silva and Aleksandar Mitrovic have been charged following the incidents that took place in or around the 72nd minute of their tie against Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday 19 March.

"It's alleged that Marco Silva used abusive and/or insulting words and/or gestures and/or behaviour towards the match referee; that he used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official prior to his dismissal; and that he also used abusive and/or insulting words and/or gestures and/or behaviour towards the fourth official after being sent off.

"It's further alleged that in throwing a water bottle in the direction of the assistant referee his behaviour was improper. The FA has claimed that the standard punishment which would otherwise apply to Aleksandar Mitrovic for the sending off offence of violent conduct that he committed towards the match referee is clearly insufficient.

"In addition, Aleksandar Mitrovic's behaviour and/or language was allegedly improper and/or abusive and/or insulting and/or threatening following his dismissal.

"It's also alleged that Fulham failed to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion."
