Aldi shoppers warned to check their bank accounts after 'technical error'

Aldi customers are being urged to check their bank accounts to see if they've been affected by a technical error.

A technical glitch has meant that several shoppers have been overcharged, sometimes by hundreds of pounds, for transactions made at a store earlier this year.

The glitch was first spotted at a store in Rhyl, North Wales, and was flagged by a series of signs near the store's tills, reports the Manchester Evening News .

The signs read: "A technical error meant that Mastercard and VISA payments made by customers in this store were not processed between August 15 and September 22.

"If you shopped here during this period and paid on card you will see the transaction complete and appear on your bank statement from Thursday, October 3."

Many shoppers were left out of pocket by the glitch, with one claiming to have had £782 taken out of her account after she made purchases in the store on two separate occasions in a seven-day period.

Aldi is urging anyone affected by overdraft charges as a result of the error to contact the company.

No other stores have reported errors, but the chain has advised anyone who shopped in Aldi in the same period to double check your account just to be on the safe side.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “Due to a technical error Mastercard and VISA payments made at our Rhyl store between the 15th August and the 22nd September were not processed. Customers who made a payment on card during this period will see the transaction appear on their bank statement from Thursday 3rd October.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused and want to assure customers that card payments are now being processed at this store as normal.”

For further information or to raise any concerns, you can contact Aldi's customer service desk on 0800 042 0800.
