Aldi shoppers stunned after spotting security nets placed over tubs of Lurpak

Aldi shoppers were left stunned after one store put security nets over £5 tubs of Lurpak.

Brits going about their weekly shop, or nipping in quickly to grab a few essentials, were left baffled by the anti-theft measures on the butter.

The 600g tubs are priced at £5.35 at the budget supermarket chain, but when one shopper saw the security measures over it they said: “What the f***?”

Stefani Nurding was left stunned by the protected butter, which comes as Brits have been battered by rocketing food prices over the last few months.

Although overall inflation is expected to fall in 2023, the government has said food price inflation is expected to remain high in the short term.

Stefani filmed it in the store in Kidbrooke, south east London.

One local said: "Lurpak is going crazy, £5.35 for some butter?"

Another added: "They can afford the extra protection, but can't reduce the price."

A third person added "I've seen shops do this with 470ml cans of Red Bull.

"The sad reality is such items are stolen frequently and this is how stores can protect their stock."

Another said: "They're 6.92 here in the Netherlands, but we don't keep them hostage."

A video of the butter was also shared on TikTok where it was viewed over seven million times, with almost 4,000 comments from users.

Since last year, a 500g tub of Lurpak butter has increased by approximately 37% in price in Aldi stores, from an initial £3.65 to now £5.00.

The current rate of inflation in the UK is at 10.4%, as latest statistics from February show.

Aldi has been approached for comment.
